At first, they displayed all the proof they had of Barry being unable to care for her, such as Barry not having a steady income yet lending money to his old classmate, which caused more financial burden on their family.

They also brought out photos of Karen when she was pregnant, saying that Barry was unable to provide nourishment for her and her baby.

All in all, the picture they painted was that Karen had no intentions of leaving her husband and her son until she was forced to because of her circumstances. Barry couldn't provide for her, and she would have been starved to death if she didn't leave him.
