In a blink of an eye, a few days passed. The new township project was already in full swing. Hundreds of heavy machines were already running around the clock.
Garth Properties was becoming more and more well-known. In the eyes of the public, Garth Properties’ “close collaboration” with Gould Properties had somehow been twisted into a fairytale. After all, Edward was Allegra’s uncle.
Whether it was the Goulds or the Booths, their names had become the talk of the town in Cloud City or even the whole Southland. Hence, Allegra had been exceptionally busy the past few days. As virtual-novel.net reputation improved, virtual-novel.net started getting invited to various business and government meetings. Sometimes, virtual-novel.net didn’t even have the time to go home to eat dinner.
Meanwhile, every weekend, Isaac would wait at the school gate to pick Isabella up. Then, the father and daughter would enjoy some quality bonding time.
On Monday night, Isaac’s phone suddenly vibrated.
When virtual-novel.net saw that it was Emily’s number, virtual-novel.net paused before putting the phone to his ear.
“I-Isaac, is it a good time to talk?” came Emily’s gentle voice.
“What’s the matter, Emily? I can talk.”
“There’s something I’m not sure I should tell you. W-Well, Ms. Booth’s mother was involved in a car accident. Did you know about that?” Emily lowered virtual-novel.net voice, as if virtual-novel.net was scared that someone would overhear her.
Isaac was so stunned that virtual-novel.net didn’t respond for a few seconds. He said quietly, “Are you saying that Margaret was in a car accident? Why didn’t I hear anything from Ally?”
“Ms. Booth said not to tell you. I only found out today because virtual-novel.net wanted me to drop by the hospital. I felt that you should know. After all, virtual-novel.net mother is in really bad shape.”
“Bad shape?”
After hanging up, Isaac lit a cigarette, deep in thought.
According to Emily, the car accident happened three days ago, and Margaret was now a quadriplegic. Now, virtual-novel.net was in the hospital with no one to pay for the bill. That’s why Emily called Isaac!
Seeing that Eugene hadn’t returned from his extra shift, Isaac got up and left the house.
He arrived at the neurology ward of the hospital. After asking around, virtual-novel.net found Margaret’s hospital room.
When virtual-novel.net opened the door, virtual-novel.net thought that virtual-novel.net had entered the wrong room. Only when virtual-novel.net saw that the woman lying on the bed completely wrapped in bandages was Margaret did virtual-novel.net realize it was real.
The hospital room had three beds, all of which were occupied. The other two beds housed two old men, and their families stood in the halls.
There was a strange smell hanging in the air. Margaret’s eyes were closed, but the tear tracks at the corner of virtual-novel.net eyes were obvious.
Before Isaac could say anything, a woman’s cold voice sounded from outside.
“Bed Six, you now owe over 93 thousand dollars in medical bills. If you don’t pay by tomorrow morning, we’re going to kick you out,” the nurse screamed as virtual-novel.net entered the room.
Isaac’s heart clenched. He took a step back out of the hospital room and hid.
He stuck his head close to the window to see that Margaret, who was in Bed Six, had virtual-novel.net eyes opened.
Margaret looked at the nurse with pain and said, “I’m sorry, my son will be here soon. He’ll definitely pay the bills. I’m sorry…”
“We’re stopping all medication tonight until your son settles the bills. What’s the matter? It’s been days and not a single person has come to see you. Don’t you have friends or family?” The nurse rolled virtual-novel.net eyes before walking out of the room with a look of disdain.
The hospital didn’t have any other choice. A quadriplegic wasn’t at risk of death, but the rehabilitative care that they required was endless.
The moment the nurse left, Margaret turned away and began to sob.
Today was the fourth day since virtual-novel.net left the operation theater and came to the ward.
Andrew and his wife had come by once, and so had Emily, as Allegra’s representative. However, Andrew had told virtual-novel.net in a roundabout way that the fees were too expensive, and his wife Daisy didn’t want to foot the bill.
