Thomas and the gang immediately left the sandstorm, setting off on the same path they had entered from.

While they were on their way back, they were careful to avoid a direct encounter with the ant army. Before the sky turned completely dark, they finally returned to the SUV. The four of them ate, drank, and rested in the car for the night.
