Brad gave a dry chuckle. It was not a sarcastic laugh, but rather, a laugh intended to mask his panic. He was a clever person, and he knew Thomas would never crack a joke at this point in time.
Thomas had said the truth, Angus was his subordinate. Hence, his rank would at least be as high as the deputy director, if not higher. Brad would not be so terrified right now had he known about Thomas’s prestigious status from the start.
People were always scared of the possibility of marching straight to their own deaths by challenging someone of a high status even after learning of their distinguished status. If Thomas’s position was truly distinguished, then Brad’s actions all along might be summed up in one word, foolish. True fear would be born after learning about how foolish their actions were.
“Don’t keep me guessing, Thomas. You said that Angus is your subordinate, correct? Then, are you the deputy director or the director?”
“Neither of them.”
