The situation unfolded so quickly that Candace had no time to react. Or, perhaps she never anticipated that in the face of life and death, Remus would still have the presence of mind to think about such things.
Or to put it more bluntly, she never expected he would still be thinking about such trivial things when he was already at this stage.
After about three seconds, Candace snapped, "You animal! How dare you take liberties with me!"
Candace was more frustrated than ever. She tried to get up, determined to use her last bit of strength if necessary, to end him.
Unfortunately, never mind getting up, she didn't even finish speaking when Remus grabbed her by the neck, squeezing tightly. There wasn't a trace of emotion in his eyes.
