It was late, and before Balin could comprehend what was happening, a massive bolt of lightning struck down from the sky and detonated in front of him in an instant.
The explosion was deafening, accompanied by a blinding light that temporarily robbed him of his vision. What terrified him even more was the searing pain that surged from his palm throughout his entire body.
The overwhelming electric current caused his muscles to convulse violently. He was thrown back by the force of the lightning, and the sword he was holding slipped from his grasp.
The agonizing pain sent him crashing to the ground, his clothes reduced to rags, and his hair and beard singed into a blackened mass. If he hadn't been strong enough, he would have been obliterated right then and there!
The thunder had nearly torn Balin apart. He wiped at his hair, discovering that what was once his long, flowing mane had turned to fine black ash with just a single touch. His eyebrows and beard suffered the same fate.
