The slender Concorde jet took off from the Beirut International Airport in Lebanon. The plane soared high into the sky and flew towards China at supersonic speeds. On the plane, Zoey sat by a window, staring out of it in a daze. Until now she’d felt her experiences over the past hour or so were a dream. However, she quietly looked at Charlie, sitting in another seat not far away with his eyes closed and resting. She could finally see that it all was not a dream, but reality.
Thinking of Charlie going to Syria alone and saving herself from the brink of death, Zoey felt very guilty along with being grateful. She felt that after even after so many years of reading about the world, and also studying economics and finance, that in the end, she was completely naive and couldn’t see the truth of human nature.
At first, she was so ashamed of abandoning her peers, but now thinking about it carefully she realized they really weren't good people.
Even though they may have had a chance of freedom, they foolishly squandered it through their own actions and choices. They were then angry that she would be freed, while they had to stay and meet their fate. As a result, they would’ve rather had her die with them, than have a chance to save herself.
This made her fully appreciate the evil and selfishness of human nature.
