Charlie stopped trying to persuade Elaine and instead said to Claire, "Honey, let's go out and let Mom rest."
Claire nodded helplessly and said to Elaine, "Mom, try to calm down. Charlie and I will go out now."
Elaine ignored them and continued to cry on the bed.
Jacob was downstairs, smoking and crying like Elaine because Charlie's words had been too heart-wrenching for him. He was sitting alone on the floor in front of the sofa, leaning against it with his legs curled up.
Charlie was also helpless, so he said to Claire, "Honey, maybe we should just leave them alone and let them adjust slowly."
