Seeing Balin’s shocked expression, Kikuchi said plainly, “To be honest, the distance is indeed that far. There isn’t a flat ice cap in between, but rather numerous icebergs and hills that will significantly slow our progress. Even with the snowmobile running nonstop, the journey will take at least eight days.”
“Eight days…” Balin could not help but inquire, “Isn’t the straight-line distance just over 1,300 kilometers? Why not just fly there?”
Kikuchi quickly clarified, “Let me explain of those 1,300 kilometers, about 1,000 are over the sea. That means the helicopter won’t have any place to land for refueling. Even with an auxiliary fuel tank, it wouldn’t be able to cover that distance.”
Balin pressed on, “So, does this mean we have no option but to go around?”
Kikuchi thought for a moment before responding, “Unfortunately, there is no better alternative.”
