When Goro rushed frantically to the room where Kikuchi was being held, he found Kikuchi’s body hanging from the bathroom door frame.

He had used his own thermal pants to hang himself. This material, specially designed for polar conditions, is warm, breathable, skin-friendly and resilient. With the two pant legs tied together, it could easily support the weight of an adult over 140 kilograms. Unlike many who take their own lives, Kikuchi's face bore no signs of pain or rage. Instead, he wore a serene smile, seemingly reflecting on death itself.

As Goro and several other Americans stood in shock, doctors from the scientific research station rushed in to untangle Kikuchi’s body from the makeshift noose. The medical team began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, checking for any signs of a pulse or heartbeat.

Tragically, by that time, Kikuchi was already deceased.
