It took some time before the dim tunnel filled with the sound of scattered footsteps.
One by one, frail figures with sallow faces stepped into the light. The emptiness in their eyes began to shift, showing the faintest flicker of awareness.

No one could tell whether it was out of true gratitude or pure fear. Some meant it, they were thankful he had saved their lives. Others only knelt because of the strength he had shown.
