Outside the door, there were suddenly many footsteps and voices.
George immediately went to the door.
The small house was built with stones and mud, with a shaky little wooden door. He looked out through the crack at the top of the door, where several children were gathered outside.
George walked back and said, “They must have been attracted by the smell of chicken soup. People here hardly get enough to eat, they might not even have a decent meal in a month, let alone meat...”
He added, “We’ll leave when you’re able to walk.”
