Although they outnumbered the police, Maris' men had only come to back him up.
If they actually started a fight with law enforcement, their lives would be over. As things stood, they hadn't committed any real crimes yet. If they cooperated, the worst they would face was a few days in detention for questioning.
The responding officers arrived swiftly. Maris' men crouched on the ground, hands on their heads, as a pile of bats and knives lay discarded nearby.
Arthur walked out of the banquet hall and met the officers just as they were about to enter.
One officer stopped him, but Arthur calmly said, "I was the one who called the police."
